ToggleWHAT HAPPENED?
Real Madrid had earlier confirmed on Thursday that Mbappe had been admitted to a hospital in the United States after falling ill with a severe gastrointestinal infection. The illness forced the 26-year-old to sit out Madrid’s first fixture of the tournament – a 1-1 draw against Saudi Arabian side Al-Hilal on Wednesday – raising initial concerns about his availability for the remainder of the competition.

THE BIGGER PICTURE
Madrid’s preparations took a hit when Mbappe missed Tuesday’s open training session in Palm Beach Gardens. A club spokesperson confirmed he was experiencing a fever, which later turned out to be a symptom of gastroenteritis. As a result, he was omitted from the matchday squad for Wednesday’s clash with Al-Hilal, where young striker Gonzalo Garcia stepped in and made an immediate impact, scoring the game’s opening goal. The Saudi side equalised through a Ruben Neves penalty, and Madrid were forced to settle for a draw after Federico Valverde missed a last-minute spot kick.
